Throughout this passage, the phrase "fallen asleep" is used many times. I had to reread this passage multiple times in order to finally figure out that "fallen asleep" simply meant dead. Now, you may be thinking, how can one whom is dead be considered "fallen asleep"?!
I, personally, have never lost anyone close to me. I've lost relatives and distant individuals part of my family, but never have I lost someone close. I know it's hard as I've seen my friends grieve, and I've witnessed the damage the loss of a life can do. These people are individuals whom have affected our lives, taught us, grew with us, and ultimately left a mark on our hearts and our lives. Yet for a follower of Christ, a loss of a loved one isn't goodbye forever. Those who believe in Christ can rejoice that their dead relative is simply "fallen asleep" and the day when Jesus Christ comes back for the second time, we shall rise with them into heaven forever to be with our heavenly father!
"After that, we who are still alive and are left will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air. And so we will be with the Lord forever." [1 Thessalonians 4:17]
This passage states clearly that "we" will be caught up "together" with "them"! How amazing is that?! To know that our relatives that are followers of Christ, that love Jesus and believe wholeheartedly he is the son of God will not forever be separated from us. Death is simply saying, "See you later". Although physically they are dead to us, we will one day see them again, so rejoice!
